PRESS RELEASE

4.0 Recognition Banquet April 24, 2013
The Mojave Transportation Museum and The Mojave Chamber of Commerce once again honored the top High School Seniors at Mojave High, California City High, Boron High, Desert High (Edwards), and Rosamond High Schools.

The Eleventh Annual 4.0 Excellence in Academics Recognition Banquet was held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at the Mojave Veterans Building, 15580 O Street, next to Mojave Park, Mojave, CA, at Social at 5:00 p.m., dinner at 6:00 p.m. Plaques and special gifts were given to students who achieved a 4.0 overall grade point average.

An outstanding presentation was given by Colonel Lawrence Hoffman, USAF and Mrs. Jill Rutan Hoffman, Keynote speakers. They firmly support the encouragement of young people entering universities to follow their goals and their talk was a true inspiration!

Col. Hoffman is the Commandant, U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Edwards Air Force Base, CA. As Commandant, he is responsible for the graduate level education of the Air Force’s most highly skilled aviators as they earn the rating of experimental test pilots, flight test navigators, and flight test engineers.

Mrs. Hoffman is a twice-published aviation author and solo pilot who has seen her fair share of aviation firsts. Growing up in the famous Rutan family, she had the unique opportunity to see the impossible made possible. Her father, Dick Rutan, flew the Voyager aircraft, designed by her Uncle Burt, on its record setting non-stop, unrefueled flight around the world in 1986.

This was an exceptional evening with opportunities for our outstanding seniors who have academically excelled in their High Schools to meet these dynamic speakers and local business leaders.

Local businesses and individuals sponsored tables for each community high school. Each table sponsor received two seats at their table; the other seats were filled with students, parents, elected VIP's and school officials.

Sponsorships included: Valedictorian Sponsorship Level with 5 tables: EDF Renewable Energy; Scholarship Level Sponsorship with 2 Tables: Terra-Gen Power; Burt & Tonya Rutan donated an iPad Mini that was given to one lucky 4.0 recipient, Matthew Carder of Mojave Jr/Sr High School.

Honors Level Sponsorships – 1 table: Mojave Senior Citizens; RSI Petroleum; Mr. & Mrs. Randy Kelly; Rio Tinto, Boron Operations; Virgin Galactic/The Spaceship Company; Mojave Chamber of Commerce; Scaled Composites; Golden Queen Mining; XCOR Aerospace; Michele Slade and Gardner Realty; Mission Bank and Mojave Air & Spaceport.

The Mojave Transportation Museum and The Mojave Chamber of Commerce are once again planning to honor the top High School Seniors at Mojave High, Boron High, Desert High (Edwards), and Rosamond High Schools.

The Eighth Annual 4.0 Recognition Dinner will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at the Mojave Veterans Building, 15580 O Street, next to Mojave Park, Mojave, CA, at Social at 5:00 p.m., dinner at 6:00 p.m. Plaques and special gifts will be given to students who have achieved a 4.0 overall grade point average.

We are so pleased to announce that Michele Judd, Managing Director of the Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS), a joint institute of JPL and Caltech, will be our Keynote Speaker. The primary purpose of KISS is to develop new planetary, Earth, and astrophysics space mission concepts and technology by bringing together a broad spectrum of scientists and engineers for sustained scientific and technical interaction.

Prior to joining KISS, Michele was in JPL's Science Division where she worked on several special projects to improve the environment for researchers and helped manage the OASIS, ServoGrid and QuakeSim research teams. In 2009, Asteroid 185641 was renamed "Judd" in honor of her work at JPL. We believe this outstanding young woman engineer will be an inspiration to these young adults, who will soon be stepping into leadership roles in the East Kern in the near future.
